Key Benefits of the NIV

Unlike many other Australian visas, the National Innovation Visa offers unmatched advantages for top-tier professionals:

  • Direct Permanent Residency: Immediate permanent residency for you and your eligible family members upon approval.
  • No Points Test: Your application is assessed on your exceptional achievements, not a standard competitive points system.
  • No Employer Sponsorship Required: You do not need to be tied to a specific employer (though you do need an eligible nominator).
  • Priority Processing: Benefit from a highly streamlined, fast-tracked application process.
  • No Strict Age Limits: While standard limits apply, exemptions are available for exceptional applicants who are under 18 or over 55.

Who is the NIV For?

The Department of Home Affairs targets high-calibre individuals across four priority levels. You may be an ideal candidate if you fall into one of these categories:

FAQs About National Innovation Visa (NIV)

The National Innovation Visa (NIV) is a permanent residency visa designed for exceptionally talented individuals from around the world. It replaces the former Global Talent Visa and targets global researchers, high-achieving entrepreneurs, innovative investors, and elite athletes or creatives who can make a significant economic or cultural impact in Australia.

No, you do not need a formal job offer or employer sponsorship to apply for this visa. The NIV is based purely on your individual talent and internationally recognized achievements. However, you must be able to demonstrate that you can easily find work or establish yourself independently in your field within Australia.

Yes. To be eligible, you must be nominated by an Australian citizen, an Australian permanent resident, an eligible New Zealand citizen, or an Australian organization. Your nominator must have a national reputation in your specific field of expertise and must attest to your outstanding achievements and potential contribution to Australia.

There is no formal age limit to apply for the NIV. However, if you are under 18 years old or 55 years of age and older at the time of application, you must be able to demonstrate that granting your visa will provide an "exceptional benefit" to the Australian community.

The NIV has a very relaxed English language requirement compared to other skilled visas. Applicants aged 18 and over only need to demonstrate "Functional English" (e.g., an IELTS score of 4.5). If you cannot meet this functional requirement, you can still be granted the visa, but you will be required to pay an additional secondary visa application charge.

Yes! The National Innovation Visa allows you to include eligible family members, such as your spouse or de facto partner and dependent children. If your visa is approved, your included family members will also receive immediate Australian permanent residency.

As of the current financial year, the base government visa application charge for the main applicant is AUD $4,840. There are additional charges for each family member included in the application (e.g., dependents over 18 and under 18). Please note that this does not include costs for health checks, police certificates, or migration agent fees.

Because the NIV is a priority pathway for the Australian government, processing times are fast-tracked compared to traditional skilled visas. Once you receive an invitation and lodge your official visa application, the Department of Home Affairs typically processes decisions within 6 to 12 months, depending on the complexity of your application and how quickly you provide supporting documents.
